Mini Krishnan of The Hindu newspaper reports:

  • 5,971 children in India each year committ suicide upon receiving their examination results (or in anticipation of them).
  • The fragile emotional state of such children for not meeting their parents' expectations.
  • That many children these days equate their lives and self-esteem with their marks.
  • For many children, what matters most is their marks, rather than their all-round personalities, character development, and their skills and talents.
  • On the competitive education system that is supported by social and familial expectations.
  • That for over 100 years, we have know that an emotionally happy child will grow into a stable adult, yet education now is largely joyless and full of anxiety for children.
  • These tense children will grow up into impatient and angry young adults if we do not spend enough time with them in their early years.
  • The most valuable thing that parents can give children is their time, so that they receive the continuous confidence of their parental presence, as they grow at their own pace, and from their own inner visions.
