Social and Emotional Learning

Social and emotional learning programs lead to multiple benefits.

A recent significant contribution to the growing body of research on social and emotional learning is a report titled The Positive Impact of Social and Emotional Learning for Kindergarten to Eighth-grade Students (December, 2008).

The report reviews and discusses the findings of three extensive reviews of research on the impact of social and emotional learning (SEL). The review covers in total 37 studies involving over 320,000 children.

The findings support the key role of social and emotional learning (SEL). The research indicates that SEL programs carried out by school staff improve levels of academic achievement, student attitudes toward school, and student behaviour.

SEL programs lead to multiple benefits, and are effective in both school and after-school settings, across the K-8 range, and for racially, ethnically and geographically diverse students.

The report recommends a policy framework and practices that encourage broad implementation of well-designed SEL programs.
